Chapter 18
“Coming!” Jack stomped to the front door, already pissed off at whoever was there ringing the damn doorbell. Just a few more seconds and Sasha would have been coming on his tongue as he ate her out from behind. A fantasy he had been dreaming about since earlier in the week when she had leaned over the counter while wiping it down.
Flipping the deadbolt, he didn’t bother to check the peephole before swinging the door wide open. Jack was so frustrated he didn’t care that he was only wearing basketball shorts while sporting a semi. When he saw it was one of the older neighbors from the cul-de-sac, he tried to wipe the frown off his face.
“Hello, can I help you?” Jack asked, trying to figure out what prompted the early-morning visit.
“Good morning, young man!” The stranger shuffled the small dog he was holding until he had a hand free to hold out and shake. “I’m Vinnie and this is Peanut.” Vinnie gestured to the poufy-haired dog before hiking a thumb over his shoulder at the yard. “We were on our morning walk and I noticed that you’ve got two flat tires on your truck. Figured I’d let you know before you tried to head anywhere today.”
“Two flat tires?” Jack repeated and followed the man down the front path and to the driveway. Walking around the truck, he wanted to curse and yell but restrained himself. He had just spent a chunk of money to get all the tires replaced and there was no reason why he should have one flat, let alone two. “I must have driven over some nails or something…”
“I wouldn’t be surprised, considering all of the new houses that are going in down the street.” Vinnie sat his dog down to sniff at the grass by his feet. “I’ll let you get back to your Sunday morning, young man.”
“I appreciate it, sir. Thank you.” With a nod, Jack waved goodbye to Vinnie and Peanut as they walked down the driveway.
The absolute last thing he wanted to deal with today was truck troubles, especially since he had his doubts that the flat tires were accidental. Leaning down, Jack ran his hand over the rubber, trying to catch a glimpse of whatever had caused the flat. When he wasn’t able to see any silver nail heads on either tire, he cursed under his breath.
For the past few days, Jack had an odd feeling that someone had been messing around outside the house. He wasn’t necessarily looking for things to be out of place, but there had been little bits here and there that made him suspicious. An open gate, a package that was supposed to have been delivered but was missing, and some potted plants on the back deck that had been shuffled around had put him a bit on edge.
None of those things added up to anything by themselves, but now that he had not one but two flat tires, he was definitely worried.
Jack had to
